Why You’re Struggling With Tough Questions(JEE Mains and Advanced) (And How to Fix It)

Hello everyone

Today, let’s talk about something that almost every student preparing for competitive exams like JEE faces — difficulty in solving tough questions.

You might be someone who can solve easy and moderate problems comfortably, but when a difficult question appears, it suddenly feels like your brain just stops working. You start thinking, “Maybe I’m not capable enough.”

But here’s the truth: it’s not your capability — it’s your approach.

In this post, I’ll break down the common mistakes students make and the exact habits you need to build to improve your problem-solving skills.

Mistake #1: Ignoring Concept Gaps

Most tough questions are not difficult because they are “hard” — they are difficult because they involve multiple concepts combined together.

Now imagine this situation:

  • You understand 50–60% of the concepts used in a question

  • But you’re missing the remaining part

In such cases, no matter how long you try, you’ll likely get stuck.

What You Should Do Instead

Start maintaining a “Difficult Questions Notebook.”

Whenever you encounter a tough question:

  1. Write it down in your notebook

  2. Identify which concepts you don’t know

  3. Leave it for now

  4. When you later study the missing concept, come back and solve it again

This simple habit ensures that:

  • You convert weaknesses into strengths

  • You don’t keep repeating the same mistakes

Mistake #2: Giving Up Too Quickly

This is probably the biggest mistake.

Most students:

  • Read the question

  • Think for 2–3 minutes

  • Get no clue

  • And immediately leave it

But here’s the problem:
👉 Problem-solving is not about knowing — it’s about thinking.

Even if you know the theory, the real challenge lies in applying it.

The Correct Approach to Tough Questions

If you really want to improve, follow this structured method:

Step 1: Give It Real Time

Spend 20–30 minutes on a single tough question.

During this time:

  • Think in different directions

  • Try multiple approaches

  • Relate it with concepts you’ve learned

  • Break the problem into smaller parts

👉 Many times, you’ll either reach the solution or get very close.

Step 2: Take a Strategic Break

If you still can’t solve it:

  • Leave the question for a day

  • Come back and try again for 5–10 minutes

This works because your brain keeps processing in the background.

Step 3: Use Hints (Not Full Solutions)

Still stuck?

  • Take a hint, not the full solution

  • Try solving again

Only if you’re completely unable to proceed:

  • Read the full solution carefully

  • Focus on understanding the logic

Step 4: Active Recall (Most Important!)

Now comes the step most students skip:

  • Leave the question

  • Come back the next day

  • Try solving it again without looking at the solution

This tells you whether you actually understood it or just “felt like you did.”

Step 5: Create a Summary

  • Write a short summary of the solution in your own words

  • Keep revising it weekly

And whenever you revise:

  • Try solving the question again

 Final Thoughts

Yes, this entire process is time-consuming.
But it’s also extremely powerful.

Because in the long run:

  • You develop deep thinking ability

  • You improve concept clarity

  • And most importantly, you train your brain to handle difficult problems confidently

Remember:
👉 Tough questions are not there to defeat you — they are there to grow you.

Your Action Step

Starting today:

  • Pick 1 tough question daily

  • Follow this entire process

Do this consistently, and within a few weeks, you’ll notice a massive improvement in your problem-solving skills.
